President Ilves congratulated Martti Ahtisaari on winning the Nobel Peace Prize

10.10.2008

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves phoned the former Finnish Head of State Martti Ahtisaari today to congratulate him on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

“Your actions have proven how flexibility, together with determination and a refusal to concede, can help to resolve the most complicated conflicts and to create peace even in places where many have lost hope,” President Ilves said. “Please accept my congratulations, and those of the entire Estonian people.”

Ahtisaari received the Nobel Peace Prize for his long-term work as an international mediator, which resulted in achievements that included the peace agreement between the government of Indonesia and the Acehi rebels, as well as peace mediating activities in Namibia and Kosovo.
