The President of the Republic met with Max Jakobson

16.09.2008

At today’s meeting in Kadriorg, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and renowned Finnish diplomat Max Jakobson thoroughly discussed the security situation in Europe after the Russian-Georgian war. In the course of the conversation, the relations of the European Union with Russia and the future of NATO were touched upon.

According to President Ilves, after August 8th of this year, Russia’s neighbors and the entire democratic world is confronted by a new policy and rhetoric from Russia.

“The European Union, which has accepted the role of peacemaker in the Russian-Georgian conflict, must demand that Russia observe international law, honor the sovereignty of other countries, and fulfill the agreements it has concluded,” Ilves said referring to French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s peace plan.

Speaking about the attitude of the European Union member states toward the Russian-Georgian conflict, President Ilves and Max Jakobson recognized that at the decisive moments in the crisis the Community spoke in unison.

“Tactical differences have not overshadowed our unity, the European Union member states supported a common solution, and that is what we can proceed from,” the Estonian Head of State said.

Max Jakobson heads Estonia’s International Commission for Investigation of Crimes against Humanity that was created by President Lennart Meri and which will present its final report at the end of this year. Jakobson’s comprehensive treatments of 20th century European history and the choices that Finland has faced have also been published in Estonian.
