President Ilves visited the village of Kohatu

31.08.2008

Yesterday in Harju County, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves visited the village of Kohatu, in Kernu Rural Municipality, which earned the title of the most beautiful village this year.

Together with Enn Karu, the Mayor of the Rural Municipality and Village Elder Rein Viilu, the Head of State visited the Sikemäe, Kirna-Vesiveski and Ehala farms, the swing and bonfire grounds built by the villagers, and met with the promoters of village life.

“People from other villages who complain that it is boring in the country should be sent here to learn,” President Ilves said. “Kohatu demonstrates very clearly, how the residents of one village, even though they are scattered over several kilometers as they usually are in Estonian villages, perceive it as their home and together want to make their home as beautiful as possible.”

“I am always happy to meet people who know how to appreciate and make use of the luxury that is provided by Estonia with its opportunity to live outside of large cities,” the Head of State said. “Here in Kohatu, one can see a true civil society, where people come together with the desire to do something together for the good of their home village.”
