President Ilves phoned the Ukrainian Head of State Victor Yushchenko

09.08.2008

Today President Toomas Hendrik Ilves spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko, with whom he exchanged information about the events in South Ossetia and discussed the possible next steps for Estonia and Ukraine.

Assessing the situation in Georgia, the Heads of State expressed bafflement regarding Russia’s actions, and President Ilves stressed that Russia must withdraw its forces from Georgia immediately. “All military activity must cease immediately in order to prevent the spread of the conflict and Russia must acknowledge Georgia’s territorial integrity,” President Ilves said to the Ukrainian Head of State. “Only then is it possible to set about resolving the problems by peaceful means.”
