05.08.2008

On the occasion of the death of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the Russian writer and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves sent a message of condolence to the writer’s widow Natalya Dmitrievna.

“Alexander Solzhenitsyn opened the eyes of the world, by sharply and straightforwardly evoking the true and horrific face of the totalitarian Communist regime and the pain of millions of victims,” the Estonian Head of State wrote in his letter of sympathy. “Silence became impossible and incongruous, the anguish of millions of people, which the great writer poured into words, changed the world.”

“Since the story of the completion of Solzhenitsyn masterpiece Gulag Archipelago is connected to Estonia, his departure is deeply personal for many of our compatriots,” President Ilves wrote, expressing profound sympathy on behalf of the entire Estonian people.
