24.06.2008

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves visited the recently renovated building shared by the local rescue brigade and police in Kilingi-Nõmme in Pärnu County.

“I am proud of the bravery, capability and dedication of the rescue workers that I have seen during the last month, for instance, at the Vihterpalu forest fire and the fire at the Puhatu peat production fields, as well as at several other large bog fires,” the Head of State said.

The 850-hectare fire at Vihterpalu was extinguished in four days and the fire at the Puhatu peat fields, which involved 490 hectares, was extinguished in two weeks; hundreds of professional fire fighters, hundreds of volunteers, as well as airplanes from the Defense Forces and the Border Guard participated.

“Our rescue workers have demonstrated their professionalism, and their partners from the defense forces, from the Defense League, in addition to hundreds of volunteers have proven that they care about Estonia and Estonia’s security,” President Ilves said.

The Head of State confirmed that along with the police and border guards, rescue workers have an important role in guaranteeing the security of Estonia.
