President Ilves: The European Union must find a solution for its reform treaty together

19.06.2008

Today President Toomas Hendrik Ilves promulgated the Lisbon Treaty passed by the Riigikogu on June 11th, whereby the law ratifying the European Union treaty and the Treaty establishing the European Community will be amended.

“Estonia has thereby completed the ratification of the European Union reform treaty,” President Ilves said. “We have expressed our firm support for a stronger European Union with our unequivocal yes vote for the faster development of the Community.”

According to President Ilves, the news of Estonia’s final ratification of the reform treaty is especially symbolic today, when the European Council is meeting in Brussels to discuss the future of the Community and the complicated question of how to move forward with the Lisbon Treaty after the no vote in the Irish referendum.

“There are not simple solutions. But solutions exist and the European Union must find them together,” the Estonian Head of State stressed. “We cannot leave the European Union without a uniform and strong foreign policy, without a strong decision-making mechanism.”

“I am sure that our Community’s reform treaty will come,” President Ilves said.
