President Ilves welcomes the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty by the Riigikogu

“Yesterday in Tallinn, in the Estonian parliament, a step was taken toward an integrated Europe,” President Toomas Hendrik Ilves said commenting on the Riigikogu’s ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, which will update the management of the European Union. “Estonia has thereby confirmed its dedication to caring for its own future and that of the European Union.”

According to the Head of State, he is gratified that “a noteworthy consensus was achieved among the different political parties in parliament, which we should strive for in all our discussions of international issues.”

“Estonia’s, as well as the ratification resolution by the Finnish Parliament, are like a European-minded message of encouragement for Ireland, which will hold a referendum regarding the Lisbon Treaty today,” President Ilves said.
