President Ilves visited Põlva County

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves made a working visit to Põlva County on Tuesday. The Head of the State participated in a roundtable on the environmental problems of Lake Peipsi and Lake Lämmijärve, where Külli Kangur, a senior research fellow at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, provided an overview of the lakes’ environmental problems and the state of the fishing stocks.

President Ilves said that in order to improve the situation in Lake Peipsi Estonia and Russia must cooperate effectively, both bilaterally and within the framework of European Union cooperation projects.

In the course of the visit, the Head of State also became familiar with paper production at the Räpina paper mill, visited the workshop of handicraft master Ulve Kangro, and farm of the Lõbu family, where the promotion of old construction techniques and their reintroduction on a broader scale were discussed.

A meeting with the members of the Põlvamaa brigade of the Defence League concluded the President’s visit to Põlva County.
