09.05.2008

In Ärma yesterday, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves received Latvian Head of State Valdis Zatlers and Mrs. Lilita Zatlere, who arrived on a visit to Estonian this afternoon.

At the meeting between the Heads of State, several topics important to the Baltic countries, such as energy supply and security, the question of Baltic air security, cross-border cooperation and cooperation among local governments, were discussed. The developments in Georgia and Abkhazia were also discussed, as was the progress of the military missions in Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Iraq.

Speaking of energy security, President Ilves stressed that both the European Union and the Baltic countries need uniform energy policies, “The primary purpose of a common policy is to guarantee the supply of energy—this both the near and far future.”

Presidents Ilves and Zatlers also expressed concern about the situation in Burma/Myanmar following the Nagri cyclone. “It is extremely important that the assistance provided by other countries, including Estonia, reach the survivors as quickly as possible,” the Estonian Head of State said.
