President Toomas Hendrik Ilves was in Jõhvi and Kohtla-Järve on Tuesday, where he visited the Police Prefecture, the Viru Infantry Battalion, local department of the Security Police, and the Alutaguse Brigade of the Defence League.

“I met with professional and dedicated police officials, who deserve my sincere thanks for their service,” said the Head of State after his meeting with working police officers.

“Therefore, it is all the sadder to see the conditions under which the Ida-Viru police are forced to work, for example in Narva and Jõhvi, where the police buildings have not yet arrived in the 21st century,” President Ilves said. “However, I hope that the Ministry of Interior Affairs, along with his colleagues in the government, will find the required solutions as quickly as possible.”

Meeting with the members of the Alutaguse Brigade of the Defence League, the Head of State acknowledged the initiative of the men and women who have voluntarily assembled in the interests of national defence.

“The role of the Defence League, and especially of the members of the Defence League as auxiliary police officers, is constantly increasing,” said President Ilves. Thus, the Defence League, along with the Border Guard and Rescue Service, is an extremely important partner for the police.”
