The President of the Republic phoned Mikheil Saakashvili

07.01.2008

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves phoned Mikheil Saakashvili, who according to preliminary information from the Georgian presidential election has garnered the most votes.

“I recognize the Georgian nation, for choosing a democratically fair and transparent way to come out of a political crisis,” said the Head of State.

Previously, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) observers in their report had recognized that the Georgian presidential election corresponded in substance to the majority of international standards established for democratic elections, although problems also appeared that must be dealt with quickly.

President Ilves placed importance on the assessment of the head of the OSCE observation group, Alcee L. Hastings, according to whom the elections were an expression of the free choice of the Georgian people. “This shows that Georgia has remained true to European choices, which is also confirmed by the opening of the presidential elections to all observers,” the Estonian Head of State added.

“At the same time, I am sure that Georgia will not ignore the problems pointed out in the OSCE report and will be able to solve them in a proper manner,” President Ilves said to Mikheil Saakashvili. “Estonia will continue to support Georgia’s democratic political and economic reforms.”

The Estonian Head of State expressed his hope that all the parties will acknowledge the results of the presidential elections.

“I believe in the composed wisdom and foresight of the Georgian nation to organize their life in today’s world and I believe in the readiness of the various parties in Georgia to shape the common future of their country,” said President Ilves.

The President of the Republic also recognized the members of the Estonian Riigikogu, who traveled to Georgia to observe the presidential elections there.
