The President’s Regional Development Roundtable discussed education-related issues

On Tuesday the President’s Roundtable on Local Government and Regional Development gathered in Kadriorg, where the main topic of discussion was Estonia’s educational life in 2008. Tõnis Lukas, the Minister of Education and Research spoke to the local government representatives.

According to President Ilves, education is one of the most important priorities for the Estonian state, “As the latest results of the comparative PISA studies show, we are also very accomplished in this field.” In addition, the Estonian Head of State affirmed to the participants of the roundtable that he is as worried as they are about the longevity and future of country schools.

In his presentation, Minister Tõnis Lukas focused on educational life and the new directions and changes in the financing of education that will be implemented in 2008. The questions posed to the Minister of Education touched primarily on teachers’ salaries and the financing of general education schools.

The President’s Roundtable on Local Government and Regional Development consists of representatives of the county local-government associations and their umbrella organizations. The function of the roundtable is to formulate recommendations for the President of the Republic in questions related to regional development.
