On Friday, President Ilves will open border posts for Mulgimaa

25.10.2007

On Friday, October 26th at 4 pm, President of the Republic Toomas Hendrik Ilves will open a signpost that designates the symbolic border of Mulgimaa at the 57th kilometer of the Imavere-Viljandi-Karksi-Nuia highway on the border between Pärsti and Paistu rural municipalities.

In order to prevent Mulgimaa from being forgotten as a historical cultural region, the Mulgi Cultural Institute has made the designation of the borders of Mulgimaa as one of its priorities. To fulfill this aim, seventeen “Mulgimaa” signposts are being erected on roads to mark the old parish borders.

Setting up the Mulgimaa signposts is the first bigger step in drawing public attention to this cultural region and future projects will support this goal.

Five parishes belonged to Mulgimaa: Halliste, Helme, Karksi, Paistu and Tarvastu. These parishes were primarily united by language—the mulgi dialect—along with folk customs and the wearing of ancient folk costumes. Mulgimaa is also known as the Estonia’s “economic cradle”. Legends are still told about the “mulks” who grew rich by growing flax.
