President Ilves started consultations to find candidates for three high public positions

12.09.2007

Yesterday in Kadriorg, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves started consultations with the Riigikogu fractions with the objective of preparing for the appointment of the Chancellor of Justice, Auditor General, and Chairman of the Bank of Estonian Supervisory Board by the parliament in the first half of the next year.

“I hope that we can achieve a consensus that demonstrates that our parliamentary parties have a dignified and statesmanlike understanding of the governance of the state,” said the Head of State. “The Chancellor of Justice and Auditor General must not be convenient or harmless for the Riigikogu, President or Government, quite the opposite—they must be responsive, honest, and impartial constitutional institutions that operate transparently.”

Yesterday, President Ilves met with representatives of the parliamentary factions of the Reform Party, Pro Patria and Res Publica Union, and Social Democratic Party. In the near future, consultations will be held with the representatives of the Center Party, People’s Union, and Estonian Greens.

Specific names were not discussed at the meeting; only the principles of how to arrive at candidates that would find support in the Riigikogu were under discussion.

According to the Constitution, the President of the Republic makes a proposal to the Riigikogu for the appointment of the Chancellor of Justice, Auditor General, and Chairman of the Bank of Estonian Supervisory Board; a majority vote is necessary for their appointment.
