President of the Republic added two members to the Supervisory Board of the Social Contract Foundation

12.09.2007

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves added two new members to the Supervisory Board of the Social Contract Foundation appointed in June – Urmas Sutrop, professor at the University of Tartu and Director of the Estonian Language Institute, and well-known entrepreneur Olari Taal. According to the statutes of the foundation, the supervisory board can be comprised of up to eight members.

“I am informed about the positive developments taking place in the social contract process. After all, life consists of continual change. Today, we have to discuss the choices that we are faced with and that will determine the welfare and security of our people and society. These discussions require a calm mindset and cooperation beyond everyday politics. I wish the new supervisory board strength for this task and call upon NGOs that place importance on the future of Estonia to participate,” noted President Toomas Hendrik Ilves.

The members of the Supervisory Board are academician Ain-Elmar Kaasik, Vice-President of the Estonian Academy of Sciences; Professor Andres Keevallik, Vice-Rector for Development of the Tallinn University of Technology; Anna Levandi, Head Coach of Estonia’s National Figure Skating Team; Bishop Einar Soone, President of the Estonian Council of Churches; well-known businessman and consultant Raivo Vare; and Professor Rein Veidemann of Tallinn University.

The Social Contract is a cooperation network of non-governmental organizations interested in Estonia’s long-term development, with the objective of bringing forth, discussing, and coordinating the positions of the parties, and based thereon, developing assessments and proposals in key issues regarding the country’s future. The primary topics under consideration are the health, education, social security, and regional development of our nation. Currently, more than 60 organizations have joined the Social Contract.

Social Contract activities are coordinated by the Social Contract Foundation, which was established by the President of the Republic in 2003. The Social Contract Foundation issues the annual Estonian Human Development Report. Currently, the social contract process and activities of the foundation are being reorganized according to new objectives.
