President Ilves announced a competition for research papers by historians

31.08.2007

On the occasion of the beginning of the new school year, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves announced a competition entitled “Estonia in Europe” for research papers by historians. The competition, which is being held for the ninth year and is intended for students, is organized by the Estonian History Teachers’ Association and the Körber Foundation of Hamburg.

President Ilves wishes to emphasize to the participants in the competition that by studying local history, one can learn about world history and will be able place that which has taken place in Estonia into a European and world context. “Relationships are an extremely important part of history, because nothing stands alone,” said the Estonian Head of State.

The deadline for submitting papers for the 2007/2008 academic year is April 1, 2008, and the rules for competition are available on the website of the Estonian History Teachers’ Association at http://www.eas.edu.ee/.

The research papers will be evaluated by a jury that is comprised of representatives from various scientific institutions and organizations. The evaluation will be based on the originality of the research paper, the use of information sources, skill at synthesizing, and pertinence of the paper to the topic. The authors of the best papers and their instructors will be awarded monetary prizes; the competition is supported by the Open Estonia Foundation.

To date, the student competitions for historians, which were initiated by the Körber Foundation located in Germany, are organized in 20 European countries, under the unifying title of EUSTORY.
