President Ilves congratulated world champion Gerd Kanter

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves telephoned Gerd Kanter yesterday, who won a gold medal in the discus throw at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, and congratulated him on becoming world champion.

“I am proud of you and all the Estonian people are proud of you!” said the Head of State to the fresh world champion. “All of Estonia followed the competition and rooted for you. It was a fine and confident performance, an overwhelming victory. This is a victory that you have anticipated for a long time and which had to come one day.”

President Ilves asked Gerd Kanter forward his congratulations to Kanter’s team.

“The goals for the future are clear—the Olympic gold and a world record,” said the Head of State, who invited the new world champion to visit Kadriorg upon his return to Estonia.
