Vaclav Havel sent the Estonian Head of State a declaration of support

30.05.2007

Vaclav Havel, the former President of the Czech Republic and one of the recent spokesmen for post-Communist Europe, send President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and the Estonian people a declaration of support in connection with the Russian attacks that have taken place against Estonia during the last month.

“It is hard to believe that the protests [in reaction to the decision to relocate the monument] were only spontaneous actions of the citizenry,” wrote Havel. “It seems that even in the new geopolitical atmosphere, the victims of the anti-Nazi struggle and the aftermath of the Second World War continue to be used for political purposes. The events that took place around the Estonian Embassy in Moscow firmly convinced me of this.”
