29.05.2007

On Monday and Tuesday, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves will visit the guard posts and checkpoints on the eastern border.

On the first day, the Head of State will become acquainted with the Luhamaa border checkpoint and the guard posts at Värska, Varnja and Vasknarva, as well as the Piirisaare radar observation point, where he will also meet with the local residents.

On Tuesday, President Ilves will visit several border checkpoints in Narva, participate in the official opening of the Narva 2 checkpoint, and meet with the Narva Police Department.

“Estonia’s eastern border is not just a division between Estonia and our neighboring country, but it is the external border of the European Union, the protection of which is also the protection of all 26 remaining member states of the Union. The importance of this border will increase even more after Estonia’s anticipated accession to the Schengen Agreement in 2008,” said the Head of State. “With my visit, I want to acknowledge all the capable border guards who have helped to make our eastern border modern and strong, and who serve there daily.”
