US Secretary of State to the President of Estonia: the United States supports Estonia

04.05.2007

In a telephone conversation with President Toomas Hendrik Ilves yesterday, United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice confirmed the support of the United States for Estonia and expressed deep concern about Russia’s behavior toward its neighboring country.

Rice expressed gratification that the situation in Tallinn is again peaceful and welcomed the statement by President Ilves day before yesterday, in which the Estonian Head of State emphasized the importance of internal Estonian dialogue in the solution of the problems that have developed.

The United States Secretary of State also voiced the hope that the blockade of the Estonian Embassy in Moscow by demonstrators will soon end and Russia will observe the Vienna Convention in the future.

Commenting on Russia’s cyber attacks against Estonian state institutions, Rice acknowledged, “Such pressure on an independent country is not acceptable”.
