President of the Republic met with the Polish Head of State

04.04.2007

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who traveled on a working visit to the Republic of Poland yesterday, met in Warsaw with Polish Head of State Lech Kaczyński.

At the meeting, the future of Europe was discussed at length. President Ilves expressed the sincere hope that the European Union Constitutional Treaty process can be advanced during the period of German chairmanship. “The 27-member European Union cannot function under a structure intended for six countries,” said the Estonian Head of State.

According to President Ilves, one must work at developing an understanding in Europe that common interests are also the interests of each country, and for the sake of these interests, one should be prepared to look further than just the everyday problems of individual countries.

Speaking about the region’s energy problems, President Ilves confirmed Estonia’s interest in Poland participating in the joint nuclear power project of the Baltic countries. The Heads of State discussed the possibilities of construction a Polish-Lithuanian electricity connection.

Discussing the situation in Ukraine, the Estonian and Polish Presidents expressed serious concern about the drastic exacerbation of the domestic political situation there and expressed hope that the opposing sides will maintain a sense of calm and that the political process returns as soon as possible to a normal path. Presidents Ilves and Kaczyński repeated the explicit support of Estonia and Poland for the European aspirations of Ukraine.
