President of the Republic met with Prime Minister Andrus Ansip

06.03.2007

Today, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves met Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, who received the most votes in the Riigikogu elections, with whom he discussed the post-election situation.

“Since the political parties have already started consultations to clarify the possible outlines of the new government and are ready to conduct mutual negotiations, I felt it necessary to receive information directly from the source,” said the Head of State. “Our meeting cannot be treated as the determination of the candidate for prime minister, because I will do so only after the official declaration of the parliamentary election results and the convening of the new Riigikogu, just as it is specified in the Constitution.”

President Ilves confirmed that he would hold firm to his earlier promise that he will make the proposal to become the candidate for prime minister to the head of the party that received the most votes in the Riigikogu election.

The Head of State will also meet with the representatives elected to the Riigikogu from the Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica, the Social Democratic Party, the Centre Party, the Estonian Greens, and the People’s Union of Estonia.
