President of the Republic thanks those who voted in the Riigikogu elections

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves thanks the 555,264 people who voted to elect the new Riigikogu.

“They behaved like the good citizens of a democratic country,” said the Head of State. “I am glad that these people have understood how important it is for citizens to participate in the development of their country, and that citizens have started to comprehend that the country belongs to them.”

President Ilves confirmed that after the proclamation of the official election results by the National Electoral Committee, he would start discussions with the leaders of the political parties elected to the Riigikogu. “Holding firm to my earlier promise, I will make the proposal to form the new government to the candidate for prime minister of the party that received the most votes,” said the Head of State. “I hope for the birth of a broad-based and capable government that believes in teamwork and is directed toward the future.”
