President of the Republic met with the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament

08.02.2007

At today’s meeting between President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Per Westerberg, the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag), and the delegation accompanying him, the main topics included the future of Europe and energy security in the Baltic Sea Region.

“Cooperation in the European Union between Estonia and Sweden has been intense and good, and we hold similar positions regarding many issues,” said the Estonian Head of State.

The Speaker of the Swedish Parliament opined that Estonia and Sweden could collaborate effectively in forging the future of the Baltic Sea Region.

President Ilves emphasized that a more thorough assessment should be made of the energy dependency of the EU member states on energy supplies from third countries and the solidarity mechanisms for coping in case of external pressure. “We must resist attempts to use energy supplies as political leverage,” said the Estonian Head of State.
