Today in Kadriorg, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves received Hitoshi Honda, the Ambassador of Japan, who presented his credentials.

According to the President of the Republic, the relations between Estonia and Japan have historically been very good, friendly, and based on mutual respect. “During the last few years, the bilateral contacts have become even more intensive and the relations have developed in depth. Many visits have taken place, regular political consultations have been established, there is active cultural exchange and cooperation in international organizations,” said the Estonian Head of State.

“I ask you to forward my greetings to His Majesty, Emperor Akihito. We are greatly honoured and gratified that His Majesty the Emperor is planning to visit Estonia. I am convinced that this visit will make a significant contribution to the development of cooperation between our nations and will contribute to the mutual understanding and intercommunication between our people,” said President Ilves.

According to the Japanese Ambassador, Japan and Estonia share the common values of freedom, democracy, and market economy. “Japan admires the fast and steady development of Estonia’s economy and society, following the principles of free and democratic Europe,” said Ambassador Honda.
