The President of the Republic met with the Swedish Foreign Minister

21.11.2006

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves met with Carl Bildt, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden today in Kadriorg. At the meeting, the future of the European Union and neighborbood policies were discussed, with an emphasis on Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, and Belarus and the communication of reform experiences. The security problems of the Baltic Sea countries, including the Russian-German gas pipeline, were also under discussion.

''Just as, at one time, Sweden assisted in creating the Estonian success story, Estonia now has the opportunity to assume this same role, for instance, in providing assistance to Georgia and several other reforming countries,'' said the President of the Republic.

The working visit that President Ilves will probably make to the Kingdom of Sweden in the upcoming weeks was also discussed.
