The President of the Republic met with the Riigikogu Foreign Affairs Committee

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves today at Kadriorg met with the Riigikogu Foreign Affairs Committee. The main topics of the meeting covered the situation in Georgia and possibilities of Estonia to support development of democracy in the neighbourhood of the European Union.

''When Estonia gained its freedom the support of our friends was very important for the restoration of democracy and now Estonia, in its turn, has a moral obligation to protect the democracies that have arisen in the neighbourhood of the European Union,'' President Ilves said.

The Head of State introduced to the Riigikogu Foreign Affairs Committee his foreign visits scheduled for the next few weeks. He agreed with Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Enn Eesmaa who proposed that from the Riigikogu one representative of the government coalition and one representative of the opposition should accompany the President during his foreign visits.

The President of the Republic announced his intention to meet also with the Riigikogu European Union Affairs Committee on a regular basis.
