Indrek Kannik will become the Counsellor to the President of the Republic on Security Issues

Indrek Kannik who currently is an Adviser to the Ministry of Defence will become the Counsellor on Security to the President of the Republic on October 23.

''The offer to become a counsellor to the President was a great honour for me. I am very pleased that I can continue working in the same field that I have been closely connected with during the last six years,'' Kannik (40) said.

According to the job description the Counsellor on Security guarantees that the President is well informed in the field of security policy and serves the head of state by helping him to perform his constitutional duties. The Counsellor on Security acts also as liaison between the President and the security institutions.

In 1990 Kannik graduated from Tartu University as a journalist. In 2006 he graduated from a security policy course for senior officers and civilian officials at the NATO Defence College.

From 2001 to 2004 Kannik was Secretary General of the Ministry of Defence; from 2000 to 2001 he was the head of foreign news desk of daily newspaper “Postimees”. From 1992 to 1999 Kannik was a member of the Riigikogu, and in 1994 he was the Minister of Defence.
