The President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who is on an official visit to Denmark, met today with Queen Margrethe II, who gave an audience to the Estonian Head of State, and the Speaker of the Parliament, Pia Kjærsgaard. The Head of State also had a discussion with the former Secretary General of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, took part in an IT round table organised by the Confederation of Danish Industry, welcomed the participants of the Estonian-Danish business meeting and met with the local Estonian community.

A meeting in the Danish Parliament, at which the members of both the Estonian and Danish parliaments were present, focused on the migration crisis that the European Union is facing, the solidarity of the member states in receiving refugees and the alleviation of related fears and ignorance. The migration crisis is tearing societies apart and has given rise to extremist parties in many countries.

At a 'digital round table' that brought together Estonian and Danish IT entrepreneurs and civil servants, it was discussed how Estonia and Denmark as successful IT countries could become pioneers in the European Union for the purposes of the implementation of cross-border digital services and IT solutions, with regional co-operation between Estonia and Denmark and regional co-operation between the Nordic and Baltic countries being important elements of such activities. The round table also discussed the options available for fostering IT business in Europe in general.

With Rasmussen, the former NATO Secretary General, President Ilves discussed the security situation that influences Europe and the Trans-Atlantic space, where NATO has chosen a deterrence policy to face the threats since the Wales Summit last year.

Yesterday, President Ilves met with the Prime Minister of Denmark, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, and business leaders from Denmark and he participated in a discussion organised by Foreign Policy Society with the former minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Uffe Ellemann-Jensen.

The Estonian Head of State will depart Copenhagen tonight.
