The meeting between President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Martin Dempsey, United States army general and current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, focused on defence-related co-operation between Estonia and the USA; the rotation of the units of the United States in the Baltic states and Poland and joint exercises in the region represent one component of the co-operation.

President Ilves and General Dempsey also discussed the current situation in general, touching upon the security landscape that remains restless, and the situation in Syria, which is also one of the causes behind the wave of refugees that has hit Europe.
