President Ilves: taking good care of our homes will make Estonia better

23.08.2015

The President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, today presented the annual home decoration awards in Narva.

By taking good care of their homes and improving its looks, people are simultaneously taking care of their village or town, county and, ultimately, the improvement of our country in general, said President Ilves, in extending his thanks to the owners of the beautiful homes.

"Estonia is comprised of all our contributions, and if we all share the attitude you have shown our country will become a better and more beautiful place," stated the Head of State. "Many streets in towns, shabby parks or dilapidated squares have been tidied up thanks to the example you have set."

He acknowledged the Home Decoration movement for emphasising sustainable home planning, which means emphasising energy saving and smart landscaping.

"A beautiful home is a well executed home. We all know these large private houses that were built with big bucks and are expensive to maintain. People described such extravagance quite adeptly, calling these regions "la-la land". But you can teach others how a beautiful and penny-wise approach can be fitted together," explained President Ilves.

He considered appropriate the fact that this year the awards for beautiful homes are only presented in Narva, as this town has become one of the most beautiful in Estonia in recent years. He also recommended that people from other parts of Estonia visit the new Narva promenade, for example, not to mention the University of Tartu college building and the stronghold, of course.

Apart from the 58 titles for the most beautiful homes in Estonia, the prize for the best popular sports establishment was awarded, in co-operation with the Estonia Olympics Committee, to Valgehobusemäe skiing and recreation centre in Albu. The award for the most beautiful apartment house went, in co-operation with the Estonian Union of Co-operative Housing Associations, to Lillenurk, a housing association in Pärnu. The National Heritage Board supported the selection of the most beautiful heritage object, which was the lower lighthouse complex of the Mitt family in Suurupi. The awards for energy-saving homes were presented to Mäe farm in Püha village on Saaremaa, Sepa 11 housing association in Valga and Lootus, a child welfare institution in Sillamäe.
