The greatest event in the past decade was Estonia joining the European Union and NATO in May 2004, marking the final, formal step in Estonia's and Estonians return to the West after being deported from Europe in 1940.

Vibeke Sperling

What was for you personally the greatest event in the past decade?

Estonia joining the European Union and NATO in May 2004, marking the final, formal step in Estonia's and Estonians return to the West after being deported from Europe in 1940.

What was the most important event for the world?

September 11, 2001 and all that has continued to develop from that single event in which Western, Enlightenment-derived values such as democracy, human rights and freedom are now under attack world-wide in altogether different ways than during the Cold War and Soviet domination of Eastern Europe.
