Estonia Head of State to the Vice President of the USA: together we must act with more decisiveness in response to the crisis in Ukraine

04.03.2014

Last evening, the President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, discussed Russia's military activities in Ukraine with the Vice President of the United States of America, Joe Biden.

The Estonian Head of State and the Vice President of the USA found that the current events represent a military invasion against Ukraine that democratic countries must together confront as a uniform and effective force.

"Regrettably, we can still see too much hesitation and fear in Europe. Together we must act with more decisiveness to stand for the values that NATO and the European Union rely upon and that they were established to defend," the Estonian Head of State said. "This is an issue of the credibility of the democratic world."

In a telephone conversation initiated by Vice President Biden, President Ilves stated that the crisis in Ukraine will change the security situation in Europe and, as a consequence, a different attitude must be adopted by NATO and the EU in general, and by all the allies separately.

"The contribution of the United States of America to the security of the region and their presence here, in serving as a deterrent, will become more and more important again," told President Ilves.

The telephone conversation included a discussion of possible sanctions that democratic countries could impose to control the military invasion that is taking place in Crimea.
