Media response of the Office of the President in relation to the announcement of the resignation of the Prime Minister, Andrus Ansip, at the beginning of March this year

23.02.2014

After the Prime Minister, Mr. Andrus Ansip, has informed the Head of State of his resignation, President Ilves will commence consultations with all the political parties represented in the Parliament in order to appoint a new candidate for the position of Prime Minister. He has 14 days to make his choice.

Should the Parliament support the suggested candidate for the position of Prime Minister, the Head of State will appoint ministers at the proposal of the Head of the Government. The current government will continue to fulfil its duties until the new government takes office.

According to the Constitution of the Republic of Estonia, the candidate for the position of Prime Minister can only be appointed by the President of the Republic and only the Parliament can give the candidate the authorities that are required to form the government. This is the one and only process to be observed.
