"Max Jakobson – a great diplomat of post-war Europe – considerably developed and broadened foreign policy thinking in both Finland and Europe in general, including Estonia," wrote the President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, in a letter of condolences sent to the family of Max Jakobson, the Finnish diplomat, statesman and good friend of Estonia who passed away on 9 March.

"Estonians will recall, with the greatest of gratitude, the work he did in 1998-2008 as Chairman of the Estonian International Commission for the Investigation of Crimes Against Humanity, established by President Lennart Meri. Max Jakobson's contacts with Estonia date back to pre-war times, when he studied German language in Haapsalu."

In 2002, the Republic of Estonia thanked Max Jakobson for the work he did for our country with Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana, class I. Finland and Europe will remember him as the author of a number of works, including the three-volume historical 20. Vuosisadan Tilinpaatos.
