President Ilves expressed his condolences to the United States of America in response to the tragic school shooting in Connecticut

15.12.2012

"I am shocked to the very core of my heart to hear of the tragedy that has ripped apart, in pre-Christmas silence, Newton, Connecticut, where dozens of people – most of them children – were killed in yesterday's school shooting," told the President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves.

"Estonia reaches a hand in condolence to the families and friends of those who were killed in Sandy Hook Elementary School," confirmed the Estonian Head of State, who sent his expression of condolences today to the President of the United States, Barack Obama, assuring that Estonia's thoughts are with the United States of America in these difficult days.

"The gloom of yesterday forces each and every one of us – from heads of state to common citizens – to ask ourselves, over and over again, how tragedies like this can be avoided, and how we can make our countries safe for our children. These interrupted lives are like a reproach for the society of grown-ups, who were unable to avoid such a devastating occurrence," President Ilves admitted.
