“Libraries need to continue, and unfortunately increase, their singular roles as intellectual citadels. After all, there are not many places where books are counted instead of money.

This is the home of the knowledge accumulated by generations and the new knowledge to be developed tomorrow,” President Toomas Hendrik Ilves said at the inauguration of the new library building at the Tallinn University of Technology.

The Head of State acknowledged that modern libraries can increasingly be spoken of as information centres, where all types of modern media are stored alongside books, and where workstations are designed to be gates to other information centres.

According to President Ilves, he is extremely pleased with the library building at the Tallinn University of Technology, because after a long while, a new centre for learning and reasoning, intellectual development and wellbeing has opened its doors.
