07.10.2009

On Friday, 9th October, the President’s Academic Advisory Board and the Centre for Ethics of the University of Tartu will hold President’s “Chautauqua”, focusing this year on trust and responsibility in politics, economics and society. Around 150 opinion leaders will jointly and separately seek answers to the core questions about Estonia’s future and exchange their thoughts about the lessons learned from the economic recession.

President’s “Chautauqua” begins at 11:00 with the opening speech by the President of the Republic and will culminate in a two-hour discussion of the chairmen of the parties represented in Riigikogu at 16:00 (to be moderated by Ainar Ruussaar, Chief Editor of BNS).

Two panel discussions will also be held. The discussion on economics will be chaired by Märten Ross, Deputy Governor of Bank of Estonia, and the members of the panel will include Toomas Luman, Chairman of the Board of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and banker Indrek Neivelt. The discussion on society and politics will be chaired by Professor Margit Sutrop, Head of the Centre for Ethics of the University of Tartu, and the members of the panel will include Tiina Kaalep, Member of the Board of the Estonian Public Broadcasting, a political scientist Iivi-Anna Masso and business advisor Raivo Vare.

The tradition of the President’s “Chautauqua” was started by the President of the Republic, Mr Toomas Hendrik Ilves, in October 2007 in Pärnu; last year, the discussions were held in Tartu.
