The Academic Advisory Board of the President evaluated the entries submitted to the essay contest

At yesterday’s meeting of the President’s Academic Advisory Board, the winners of the essay contest entitled “What Kind of Estonia Do I Want to Live In?” were chosen and they will be announced at the awards ceremony in Kadriorg on June 22nd.

A total of 326 papers were received by April 23rd, from which an authoritative preliminary jury chose 30 essays. The assessment took place in three categories – winners were chosen from among basic school pupils, secondary school students, and adults.

According to President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, the large number of entries confirms the wish of the people to actively participate in the formation of Estonia’s future.

The essay contest was organized by the Ethics Center at the Unversity of Tartu in cooperation with the Academic Advisory Board, Akadeemia magazine and the Ministry of Education and Research.

Also discussed at yesterday's meeting was the topic of the transition of Estonia’s Russian-language schools to partial Estonian-language instruction. Tõnis Lukas, Minister of Education and Research gave a presentation to the Academic Advisory Board on integration, language immersion and the educational level of the Russian-language schools.
