President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Ieva Ilves hosted the Head of State of Poland, Andrzej Duda, and Agata Kornhauser-Duda last night at Ärma. The main issues discussed at the dinner of the heads of state included the United Kingdom's referendum on membership of the European Union, the future of the EU and the upcoming NATO Summit in Warsaw, at which the allies will agree on a solution to strengthen the eastern wing of the alliance.

"We must give the UK reasonable time to consider the outcomes of its decision; however, this time is not unlimited," emphasised President Ilves.

"Despite everything, the UK will also remain in Europe after Brexit; they will remain our important allies and it is a relationship to be safeguarded," he said.

Presidents Ilves and Duda stated that the most important decisions to enhance the presence of the allies along NATO's eastern wing have already been negotiated, in essence, but the final agreements will be formalised at the table of negotiations during the NATO summit in Warsaw.

"NATO does not have to justify anything or apologise to anyone – the things that we do are related to the credibility of the alliance and the security of all the allies," assured President Ilves. He also said that the NATO Summit in Warsaw is part of shaping a modern Trans-Atlantic security architecture.

"The successful organisation of the summit will confirm the role of Poland as a key player in security policy in Central and Eastern Europe," stated President Ilves.
