"Estonia and Romania share a similar threat assessment and view of security," said the President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, yesterday, after a bilateral meeting with the Head of State of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, in New York, where both heads of state are taking part in the high-level opening week of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The regional security of NATO's east wing and trans-Atlantic co-operation were the main issues discussed at the meeting.

"Estonia and Romania have similar views of the security situation. Both countries highly value the contribution of NATO's allies to ensuring the security of the region," said President Ilves after the meeting.

According to President Ilves, the security challenges that Europe faces are not over; therefore, we, as NATO's east wing countries, must continue to pursue the activities required to develop both the national and collective defence capabilities of the alliance. "The deterrence that NATO embodies plays an important role in protecting NATO's east wing and needs to be permanent and persistent," emphasised President Ilves.

Both presidents agree that the migration crisis, which has hit Europe in general, will seriously test the countries. "Apart from emergency measures, we need to pay more attention to long-term solutions and work with the initial causes; efforts have to be continued to ensure peace at the sources of crises," stated President Ilves.

The President of Romania thanked the Republic of Estonia for opening an embassy this summer in Bucharest.
