The President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, about the outbreaks of violence and resultant casualties in Ukraine

03.05.2014

President Ilves:

"Estonia mourns with Ukraine those who lost their lives in Odessa and Sloviansk, and wishes for a speedy recovery to all of the injured.

Once again, these tragic and violent events show how important it is to replace separatism for respect for a lawful regime and violence for democratic dialogue; one element of this is the elections that are taking place on 25 May.

However, we can see, regrettably, that Russia has not begun to contribute to the de-escalation of the conflict and continues to interfere in the affairs of Ukraine.

I am convinced that we need a sufficient number of international observers, as fast as possible, as their presence would help to ease the conflict and pacify those who have chosen violence; this would also provide the democratic allies of Ukraine with the information required to devise the next steps.

Democracy in Ukraine should be in everybody's interests."
